At 10 pm, on February, 11th 1963, The Beatles had been working
for twelve hours (They had done 13 takes of HOLD ME TIGHT, but
it was finally discarded until some months later, and then they
hastily recorded four covers (ANNA, BOYS, CHAINS and BABY IT'S
YOU). To complete their first album they needed five songs, so
there was one left and although they were already out of their
scheduled time at the studio, George Martin took them to the
canteen and asked them for a number which could be done in one
or two takes (John was already on the very verge of loosing his
voice). They decided on The Isley Brothers hit TWIST AND SHOUT,
which they were doing on their act for some months. With the
studio staff as their audience, they delivered the most raving
performance those studio men would see in all their lives. They
wanted to try for a second time, but John just could not sing
any more. (I think that second take was not at all needed).

In the verses, John used to play G, A and A7 chords with his
thumb for the bass note and an index half barre for the first
and second strings. He muted the fourth string with his ring
finger on the fifth string. For those who find it hard for a
start, it is easier playing those chords barred (six string
barre) The muting is done the same way.
